Gothenburg, Sweden | January 23, 2023 – Qualisys, the leading provider of precision motion capture (mocap) technology and 3D tracking systems, today announced the launch of the Arqus A9UW and A12UW underwater motion capture cameras, strengthening the company’s position as the only provider for underwater motion capture technology.

Qualisys has already revolutionized underwater motion capture – more than 10 years ago, the company launched the world’s first commercially available underwater motion capture camera. Its underwater systems have been successfully used across a variety of underwater applications, such as for swimming and underwater gait and rehabilitation, as well as engineering and industrial applications, often used in towing tanks, wave basins, and ocean basins.

Animators can also deploy a Qualisys underwater motion capture setup to record a realistic animation of underwater movement – films like Avatar do not seem so far-fetched to approach with Qualisys underwater systems within reach.

Arqus Underwater cameras mimic the extreme performance characteristics of the above-water Arqus platform, launched in June 2020. Users will experience high resolutions of 9MP-12MP, capturing at frame rates of 300hz. The camera’s strobe consists of 24 high power deep blue LEDs that can illuminate markers at more than 30m distance. With its powerful strobe and high resolution, Arqus Underwater is the optimal choice for large volume coverage.

The camera also features a quick attach system for wall mounting consisting of an inexpensive mount plate that is bolted to the wall at each desired mounting point, making for a seamless underwater system installation. The housing is made of stainless steel and polycarbonate and pressure tested to 40 m depth (130 ft).

The Arqus Underwater series will replace its predecessor, the Oqus/7+u camera. It is compatible with existing underwater models, including the Oqus/7+u and Miqus Underwater series, as well as Qualisys’ underwater video cameras for 3D video overlay and visual reference for the mocap system.

“We have long been the only company able to provide high-performance underwater mocap solutions. We are confident any organization looking for underwater 3D tracking, positioning or video monitoring can benefit from a Qualisys system.”
